Review: Moon

moonThis morning we went and saw Moon. Our opinions?

JOSH: After having watched Alien, Event Horizon, Outland and Sunshine in the past few weeks (and with the exception of Outland, being relatively disappointed with each of them) Moon was exactly what I have been looking for from the science fiction genre: thought-provoking and clever without turning ridiculous half-way through. In fact, I don’t have anything negative to say about it. Easily my favorite movie of the year so far.  5/5

BECCA: I completely agree with Josh on this one.  Two thumbs up.  I absolutely loved it. 5/5

    Dude, I really liked Sunshine!

I will see moon though, on your recommendation.

Also, Wrath of Kahn books = sweet! Thank you both!

The first half of Sunshine was alright, but the second half with the guy who was alone on a derelict spaceship for seven years without any skin—not so much.

    Movie reviews! I’m in.

‘Outland’ is a gem. Sure it’s ‘High Noon’ in space but it has a strong style and decent direction. Looks great and fun to watch. (4 out of 5).

‘Alien’ is a genre defining film. Masterful direction and, at the time, groundbreaking in design. Almost every film and video game set in space owes some kind of credit to this film. The script isn’t perfect, but it’s one of the scariest things I ever saw as a kid. Still is. (4.5 out of 5).

‘Event Horizon’ is a wanna-be ‘Alien’ and while it is a re-tread of some design elements it does have a small amount of uniqueness. falls apart early storywise and never recovers. I DID really like the fact they didn’tt give the audience all the answers. A saving grace for me. (2 out of 5).

I can’t stand ‘Sunshine’. Somewhat interesting idea and setup. Tried to get through the first 40 minutes but then it started losing me fast once it became a lame, predictable slasher film. A horrible, horrible choice for the story. Is it not enough to be trying to fly a spaceship into the sun?! Why crap that up with a hokey no skinned freak terrorizing the next crew. D-U-M-B.

Not a fan of the production design at all either. Ships, uniforms, payload all looked stock from countless other films. (0.5 out of 5).

Agreeing with you on every count there. I really wanted to like Sunshine, but man was it terrible. For whatever reason, I had remembered Event Horizon as being better but didn’t really remember anything specific about it. So when we watched it I was immediately confronted with how dumb I was when it was originally released. I think I did myself a disservice seeing Alien so late in life—so much of it has been copied or parodied that I knew what to expect: the alien bursting out of the chest, the alien making it onto the escape pod, etc. But man, had I seen it as a kid it would have scared the crap out of me.
Outland was just fun to watch. Not having seen many westerns, I hadn’t really seen anything like it. Sure, the story didn’t have to be set in space but on the other hand I probably wouldn’t have been as interested if it wasn’t (I need to see more westerns.)
Moon, to me, was the closest thing to a perfect science fiction movie I’ve ever seen. Yes, it blatantly lifts elements from the genre (2001 and Outland definitely come to mind) but everything comes together in such an interesting and original way it just works. Yes, I loved Star Trek and continue to do so, but Star Trek really only appealed to my inner Star Trek nerd. Moon appealed to my inner sci-fi nerd.
